When you live somewhere long enough, you can begin to take its beauty for granted. But no matter how long I live in San Diego, I will never grow tired of walks along the shore in La Jolla Cove or cease to be awed and humbled by the natural beauty and interplay of the cliffs, ocean and sunshine. Even on a November day. Or perhaps most of all on a winter day, when so much of the rest of the country is buried beneath drifts of snow.

Sometimes you need to revisit this city as if you’re a tourist to be reminded of just how lucky you are to live here.

I came to San Diego 11 years ago to help a friend move and fell in love instantly. As a writer, photographer, lover of nature and the outdoors, there’s so much to be inspired by and thankful for here.

A walk along the shores in La Jolla is like medicine for your soul. You can feel it working its way through your body.

The sunshine.

The sound of the waves.

The smell and spray of the ocean.

The barking chorus of seals.

There are few other places I’ve traveled where you can walk along the beach and shores and come so close to dozens of seals, who patiently tolerate cameras, crowds of gawking, noisy tourists and giggling, curious children circling around them, invading their space all day long. I’m thankful La Jolla has become a safe haven for seals. Their presence makes a walk here something far more than ordinary.

I write about luxury travel day in and day out, chronicling far flung destinations around the world, expensive spas, deluxe jets and exclusive resorts. But here’s one destination that offers so much, so simply. A walk along the shore. The beauty of the coastline. Or perhaps roll up your pants and wade through a tide pool in La Jolla Cove to inspect its contents. The only cost is your time and energy. The rewards are perhaps a moment of peace and wonder. If you’ve never been to La Jolla before, it’s worth adding to your list. If you haven’t visited in awhile, maybe it’s time to explore it anew, on a sunny winter afternoon.
